Our statewide graduation rate went up by about 1.5%, and subgroups of reportable size (those with more than twenty students) had higher graduation rates in 2023 than in 2022. The % increases for these subgroups range from 0.4% to 6.0%, with most subgroups seeing improvements of 2.5% or more. The improvements seen in these subgroups are part of the larger improvement in graduation rates. The increase in graduation rate is attributed to technical assistance provided to the LEAs that focus on overall student support, including programs such as Communities in Schools that offer school-wide student-level support, as well as programs that provide more specialized support for vulnerable subgroups including credit recovery, counseling/mentorship, and Option Pathway programs that play a crucial role in supporting these students on their educational journey. Additionally, while the COVID-19 pandemic caused all students to experience a great deal of uncertainty and instability, the impact on the 2022 Cohort's secondary education and their ability to graduate within four years was particularly significant. If 2022 Cohort students did not make adequate progress prior to or during the pandemic (as many didn't) these students had only one full school year to make up all unearned credits and complete the required senior year credits. While, the 2023 Cohort had two full school years to make up unearned credits and complete the required senior year credits. |
