About ED Data Express Data
EDFacts Initiative
Most of the EDE data comes from EdFacts. EDFacts is a U.S. Department of Education (ED) initiative to collect, analyze, and promote the use of high-quality, pre-kindergarten through grade 12 data. EDFacts centralizes performance data supplied by state education agencies (SEAs) with other data assets, such as financial grant information, within the Department to enable better analysis and use in policy development, planning and management.
EDFacts File Specifications
The documents in this section of the EDFacts Initiative provide detailed information about each file in the EdFacts collection. The word documents provide information about the purpose of a particular file, the categories (or variables) that are in the file along with the permitted values.
Title II, Part A Use of Funds Surveys
Section 2104 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act requires each State educational agency (SEA) that receives a Title II, Part A grant to report annually to the Department of Education on how the State is using program funds. The Department collects this information in annual use of funds surveys. In addition to an SEA survey, a sample of over 5,000 school districts receive a survey that addresses how Title II, Part A funds that are awarded to school districts are used; the district sample is both nationally representative and representative at the individual State level, making cross-State comparisons possible.
U.S. Department of Education’s Budget Office
ED’s budget office provides a variety of detailed budget tables on key aspects of the Department's budget, including the President's Budget Request, Congressional action on appropriations, State allocations, and historical funding levels. Many of the funding graphs displayed in the EDE dashboards use data from these tables.
Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE) Program
The U.S. Census Bureau’s Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE) program produces single-year estimates of income and poverty for all U.S. states and counties as well as estimates of school-age children in poverty for all 13,000+ school districts. School district poverty estimates are referenced in the McKinney Vento dashboard and provided in the EDE download tool for users' convenience (referenced as CHLD_POV in the file specification and data group filters).
